Jumping into Hytale multiplayer for the first time can feel daunting. Where do you start? How do you find a good server? What do all these numbers and addresses mean? This guide walks you through everything you need to know to begin your multiplayer journey.

What is Multiplayer in Hytale?

Unlike single-player where you explore alone, multiplayer connects you with other players on community-run servers. Each server is its own world with unique rules, communities, and experiences. Some focus on competitive combat, others on cooperative building, and many offer completely custom game modes you won't find anywhere else.

Understanding Server Addresses

Every server has an address that tells Hytale where to connect. You'll typically see two parts:

Domain or IP Address This is the server's location on the internet. It looks like either:

  • A domain name: play.servername.com
  • An IP address: 192.168.1.1

Domains are easier to remember, but both work the same way.

Port Number The port is like a door number at the server's address. Hytale's default port is 5520. If a server uses the default, you often don't need to enter it. Otherwise, you'll add it after a colon: play.servername.com:5521

How to Join a Server

Step 1: Find a Server

Browse our server list to find one that interests you. Pay attention to:

  • Server type - PvP, Survival, Minigames, etc.
  • Player count - Shows how active the community is
  • Location - Servers closer to you have better connection quality
  • Description - Read what makes the server unique

Step 2: Copy the Address

On the server's page, you'll see the address displayed. Click the copy button to grab it.

Step 3: Connect in Hytale

  1. Launch Hytale
  2. Click Servers from the main menu
  3. Click Add Server
  4. Enter the Connection Address (the server IP/domain you copied)
  5. Enter a Name for the server (anything to help you remember it)
  6. Click Add Server to save it
  7. Select the server from your list and click Connect

Step 4: Wait for Connection

The game will connect to the server. This usually takes a few seconds. If it fails, double-check the address and make sure the server is online.

Your First Moments on a Server

Once connected, here's what to expect:

Spawn Area Most servers have a designated spawn point where new players arrive. This often includes signs with rules, information boards, and sometimes NPCs with quests or tutorials.

Server Rules Take a moment to read any posted rules. Every server has different expectations. Breaking rules can get you kicked or banned, so it's worth the quick read.

Chat Commands Servers typically have helpful commands. Common ones include:

  • /help - Lists available commands
  • /spawn - Returns you to spawn
  • /home - Goes to your set home location
  • /msg [player] - Sends a private message

Ask Questions Don't be shy about asking in chat. Most gaming communities are happy to help newcomers. Type your question in chat and usually someone will respond.

Common Connection Issues

"Connection Timed Out"

The server might be offline, or your internet connection has issues. Check if the server shows as online on our site and try again.

"Server Full"

Some servers have player limits. Try again later when there's space, or look for similar servers with availability.

"Version Mismatch"

Your game version doesn't match the server's. Make sure Hytale is updated to the latest version.

High Ping/Lag

You're too far from the server geographically. Look for servers in your region using our country filter.

Multiplayer Etiquette

Being a good community member makes everyone's experience better:

  • Be respectful - Treat others how you'd want to be treated
  • No griefing - Don't destroy others' builds without permission
  • Follow rules - Every server has them for a reason
  • Help newcomers - Remember, you were new once too
  • Report issues - Let staff know about problems or rule-breakers

What's Next?

Now that you know the basics:

  1. Explore different servers - Try various types to find what you enjoy
  2. Join a community - Many servers have Discord channels for socializing
  3. Vote for favorites - Support servers you enjoy by voting
  4. Make friends - Multiplayer is better with companions
